Fairy Squall

wind symphony

12' • 2023

Fairy Squall explores strict formal structures and intense linear polyphony. Each of the three melodies in the work is presented deliberately in the piece’s additive orchestration so that the listener can hear all three when they are played at once in the climax – and palindromic center – of the work. With solo piccolo bookending the piece and percussion that was selected in order to resemble the sound of the ugly stick, the work respects and honours traditional Newfoundland folk music.

This piece has not yet been premiered.
